The Seventh Seal, Knowledge vs. Belief?
The “Seventh Seal”, a Swedish 1957 drama film directed by Ingmar Bergman, about the journey of a medieval knight (Max von Sydow) across a plague-ridden landscape, and a monumental game of chess between himself and the personification of Death, who has come to take his life. In the Knights final scene he, in the presence of death says; “Help me lord, I am small, afraid and without knowledge”. What is the difference between knowledge and belief? Why does the Knight cry out to god for knowledge and not the ability to believe?

Joyce Kilmer
Biography
Early years: 18861908
Kilmer was born December 6, 1886 in New Brunswick, New Jersey, the fourth and youngest child[a] of Annie Ellen Kilburn (18491932) and Dr. Frederick Barnett Kilmer (18511934), a physician and analytical chemist employed by the Johnson and Johnson Company and inventor of the company’s baby powder. Joyce was named Alfred Joyce Kilmer after Alfred R. Taylor, the curate; and the Rev. Dr. Elisha Brooks Joyce (18571926), the rector of Christ Church, the oldest Episcopal parish in New Brunswick, where the Kilmer family were parishioners. Rector Joyce, who served the parish from 1883 to 1916, baptised the young Kilmer. Kilmer’s birthplace in New Brunswick, where the Kilmer family lived from 1886 to 1892, is still standing, and houses a small museum to Kilmer, as well as a few Middlesex County government offices.

Cowboy hat
Design
Stetson hat
Modern cowboy hats are made of fur-based felt, straw or, less often, leather. They are sold with a tall, rounded crown and a wide flat brim. They have a simple sweat band on the inside to stabilize the fit of the head, and usually a small decorative hat band on the outside of the crown. Hats are customized by creasing the crown and rolling the brim. Often a more decorative hatband is added. In some places, “stampede strings” or “wind strings” are also attached. Hats can be manufactured in virtually any color, but are most often seen in shades of beige, brown and black. Beginning in the 1940s, pastel colors were introduced, seen often on hats worn by movie cowboys and rodeo riders. “Today’s cowboy hat has remained basically unchanged in construction and design since the first one was created in 1865 by J.B. Stetson.”

The Anatomy of a Control Freak
Stephen Fagan always needed to be in charge. When he bought a house that needed extensive renovations, he oversaw the work himself. He ordered his second wife, Barbara, to say “I love you” into the phone whenever he called. He demanded that she stand in the front window each day and wave until he drove out of sight. This behavior was all part of his carefully constructed world—a world of compulsive control that began falling apart in the spring of 1998. That’s when Fagan was arrested at his Palm Beach mansion for the 1979 kidnapping of his own baby daughters from a previous marriage after a bitter divorce.

Remarks at the Spring Festival. [Reprint]

(Summary Record)
CHAIRMAN MAO: Today is the Spring Festival, and we are holding a forum to discuss both foreign and domestic problems … Do you think our state is likely to collapse or not? Imperialism and revisionism, in concert, have struck right up to our borders, do [you] democratic personages fear the atom bomb? If the atom bomb should explode, we would simply find ourselves back in Yenan. The whole Shen-Kan-Ning Border Area had a population of 1.5 millions, and in the city of Yenan there were 30,000. People cannot reply publicly unless they are first attacked. There was a time when the Kuomintang was cleverer than usual, and did not denounce us publicly. They put out a document using the method of restraining “alien’ parties, of restraining the Communist Party. Do you know about that?

Older Women Younger Men: Who’s Mrs Robinson?
In the 1967 classic film The Graduate, Dustin Hoffman says the lines that are now part of our pop culture; “Mrs. Robinson, I think you’re trying to seduce me. Aren’t you?” The answer as the movie unfolded was of course a resounding yes. The implication was that an older worldly sophisticated woman basically needed a young innocent boy toy because her husband was no longer up to the job.
